How did Thanksgiving go?

If Thanksgiving felt like a lot, you are not alone. This holiday can stir up memories, tension, exhaustion, and the quiet ache of who is missing.

When you are grieving, even the idea of checking in with yourself can feel overwhelming, so I want to make this simple and doable.

Here is a gentle framework you can try this week.

Begin by finding a quiet place
A few minutes where you will not be interrupted.

Become the observer
Notice the part of you that is aware and the part of you that had the experience. Imagine stepping back just a little so you can look at your Thanksgiving with curiosity instead of judgment.

Make three lists

  1. What did not go well: What felt difficult, uncomfortable, or painful for me. This could be a moment, a memory, a comment, or the weight of the day itself.
  2. What went well: Was there anything that brought me comfort, steadiness, or even a small moment of relief. This might be a kind word, a quiet pause, or something simple that helped you through.
  3. What were the results: What do I see when I look at the day as a whole. Did I learn something about what supports me or what drains me. Did I get through it in a way that teaches me something about what I might need next time.

Seeing your day in this way can help you understand what actually happened and what you might want to shift going forward.

  • You may realize you need more space before or after gatherings.
  • You may want to handle difficult people differently.
  • You may see that grounding or resourcing practices help you feel steadier before a visit.
